The subject of Risk Management and mushroom forays has come up a few times over this year. This is a topic that has been discussed in some European amateur myco publications over the past few years, but I've not seen anything in print for North America, including the numerous club newsletters I receive. It seems to be a topic of recent interest as there are a few newly formed N American clubs (eg. MycoAficionados de Mexico and Foray Newfoundland, among others) plus several more that currently are coming together (eg. South Carolina Upstate Mycological Society and the Nova Scotia club, among others).
So, to kick off the discussion, as well as to provide very important information to those just getting clubs off the ground, Fungi magazine and Foray Newfoundland are collaborating to collect data from as many willing clubs as possible in hopes to generate some good information on this topic. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.
Now about the survey, which is available for download in Word doc and pdf formats, for your preference. Representatives from more than 60 North American clubs are being sent this survey. The survey should take only 10 minutes to complete and consists mostly of boxes that you can check off. ALL INFORMATION SPECIFIC TO YOUR CLUB WILL REMAIN ANONYMOUS AND WILL NOT BE DISTRIBUTED. That includes email addresses. Your surveys can be sent either directly to me at Fungi magazine or to Sue Sullivan of Foray Newfoundland (her address is inside the survey). All the results of the surveys will be tabulated and the final results will be published in early 2009 in Fungi magazine; likewise the report will be posted here on Fungimag.com as a downloadable / printable pdf so that anyone can make copies; and (if you remind me) I will be glad to mail the report directly to you or someone from your club.
For most of us in the interior of N America, winter means nothing to do outdoors involving mushrooms, so I'm hoping this survey finds you with plenty of time on your hands--10 minutes, anyway. And because spring mushrooming heats up pretty quickly, let's put a DEADLINE TO RETURN THIS SURVEY AT MARCH 1, 2009...which should give everyone plenty of time to respond and will give us time to tabulate and publish the results. Thank you all in advance and I know the results of this survey will provide valuable information for all to use.
Thanks again! Best wishes and Happy Holidays!
